Allow me to rant for just a bit. Many young people drink. Yes, many kids in high school drink, and a vast majority of underage college kids have been known to throw a few back in the name of freedom from parental restraints. But once you hit 21, the allure of drinking seems to dwindle. You’re no longer sneaking around and storing vodka in mouth wash bottles and hiding bottles of rum in your sock drawer. Suddenly, you can walk into a bar, order a vodka and cranberry and be given alcohol. Now don’t get me wrong, a 21st birthday celebration is a rite of passage for many of us, but in general, taking 8 shots and drinking multiple Bacardi and diet’s in our 20s will often remind us that our livers aren’t as young as they used to be.
What I don’t understand are the people in their 20s to still prove themselves to be inexperienced 18 year olds who just got their training wheels taken off. After all those years of college partying, power hour and birthday celebrations, wouldn’t you at least understand how to control your alcohol consumption? Sure, everyone needs a good night out where you designate a friend to take care of you when you can’t manage to walk down the uneven bricks of our college bar street, but in general, haven’t you figured it out yet?
When you go out with a group of 20-somethings, chances are everyone will have enough drinks to make them good and happy, but most of them are no longer at an age where it’s okay to get sloppy drunk and lean on a wood beam in the bar with your eyes glazed over all night. Most of us settle for having a good time and making it into our own beds, where we wake up the next morning without the regret of doing something ridiculous while blacked out. It’s called growing up and learning to be responsible for your own actions. It’s no longer okay to get belligerently drunk and call all your ex-boyfriends just to tell them what you really think about them. It’s no longer okay to claim your new found independency and walk home alone, whether you’re in your familiar college town or a big city. It’s not okay to ruin everyone else’s night because you’ve become such a hot mess that you’re now a buzz kill to all your friends.
Or maybe you think it is okay…but it’s not CLASSY. And don’t you want to be a classy lady?
I don’t know. Maybe I’m crazy, because I’ve never thought that was okay, even when you aren’t of age. But since many of us are doing the grown up thing, where we go off into the real world and learn how to become responsible adults, that maybe our drinking habits could use some growing up as well. No one thinks you’re “cool” anymore (and chances are, no one ever did) because you’re the only one getting bloody wasted and making a scene. Grow up, get classy, and learn that you can still have a good time and drink, just don’t be 18 about it.
i can’t spell it out for you.
